The Organoid Automation Scientist for the Roche Institute for Translational Bioengineering (ITB) will support the establishment of a newly formed initiative in pRED (Pharmaceutical Research and Early Development) whose goal is to disrupt the traditional drug discovery process through innovation/big and bold ideas focused on advancing our ability to use more predictive human
model systems.

The automation scientist will contribute to the prototyping of human organoid cultures on a fully integrated, robotic platform (Organoid Farm). As a member of the Organoid Farm team, she/he will design, evaluate and deploy state-of-the-art organoid culture protocols in a lab framework. The Organoid Automation Scientist will work in close collaboration with other ITB and pRED researchers to develop standard operating procedures (SOP) for the culturing of organoids. This is a rare opportunity to be involved in supporting the creation and growth of a new and exciting institute that brings together scientists and engineers from around the world.

The perfect candidate is a biologist, biochemical engineer or bio-engineer with experience using liquid handlers, ideally hamilton, and integration systems. Furthermore, a candidate should ideally have a minimum of three years of working experience and strong programming skills.

Tasks & Responsibilities:

  • Survey scientific literature for state-of-the-art organoid culture protocols.
    * Implement, adapt and improve existing organoid culture protocols on the robotic platform.
    * Develop SOPs to be implemented in an organoid manufacturing facility.
    * Contribute to the improvement of existing automation procedures.
    * Assist other research groups in the development and implementation of new procedures and in the evaluation of new products and equipment.
    * Assume responsibility for the accuracy, quality and timeliness of organoid farming and phenotyping activities.
    * Participate in the planning and organization of experiments in collaboration with the team.
    * Assist in the preparation of experimental protocols, investigations and reports as appropriate.
    * Train, mentor, or supervise junior scientists within the work team.


Must Haves:

  • MSc or PhD in biology, biochemistry or biomedical engineering and experience in automation.
    * Minimum 3 years of experience in automation, preferable with biological systems .
    * Experience with liquid handlers (hamilton devices preferred) and with integration systems.
    * Good programming skills.
    * Your experience and inquiring mindset allow you to work independently, design, perform and interpret experiments, and apply new scientific methods.
    * You have good English communication skills and love to work collaboratively in an international team.

Nice to have:

  • Experience with organoids or in-vitro biological systems
    * Experience with bioreactors
    * Experience with scheduling software
    * Experience with image analysis and machine learning algorithms
    * Experience with high content imaging microscopes
